Linux Systems Engineer
Position: Senior Systems Engineer
Reports to: VP, Engineering
Role: This is a full time position for a confident, self-motivated Linux EXPERT with a professional attitude. You must be capable of performance and leadership in a dynamic, fast paced environment. Little or no travel will be required.
Objective: To build, support, and maintain secure Red Hat/Fedora Linux systems. Expand the state-of-the-art in proactive, systematic management of critical systems.
Responsibilities
- Work with project managers to plan deployments; collect requirements and specifications from internal and external customers.
- Develop and maintain a repository of Kickstart and other scripts to automate new system builds and ongoing maintenance/administration tasks.
- Configure and manage applications including Apache, Postfix, BIND, Tomcat, PHP, Perl, etc.
- Build applications from source code as needed.
- Configure system-level services including Sendmail, SNMP, Syslog, NTP, DHCP, etc.
- Configure and troubleshoot iptables firewalls.
- Specify and execute OS and application upgrades, updates, and patch management.
- Handle provisioning and installation of keys and certificates for SSL and IPSEC applications.
- Reconfigure kernel runtime parameters to enable/disable/tune applications.
- Maintain detailed documentation of systems you manage.
- Respond to support requests and monitoring alarms to resolve outages quickly.
- Develop contingency plans for dealing with failures of critical systems.
- Use ticketing/project management applications to document your work and enable coworker collaboration, hand off, and historical reference.
- Track your time with precision as you work.
Requirements
- Five to seven years experience managing Linux systems and applications in a network environment; two years on Red Hat or a derivative.
- Two years experience in a customer-facing technical support or engineering role.
- You MUST be able to demonstrate proficiency at shell scripting; experience with Perl is a plus.
- Advanced working knowledge of IP networking protocols, applications, utilities (Wire Shark, tcpdump, etc.), and hardware for Linux is REQUIRED.
- You MUST be a skilled Windows user and proficient with Microsoft Office and/or OpenOffice.
- Outstanding English technical-writing, documentation, and communication skills (a writing sample will be required).
- We build complex, mission-critical systems. You must be able to solve challenging technical problems by RTFM and using your brain instead of asking stupid questions. Seriously.
